Seat 1 · November 3

He promises you the pier.
Then he said this at Town Hall.

Hi neighbor,

Anglin’s Pier has been closed since 2022. Commissioner Theo Poulopoulos wants your vote in Seat 1. The pier’s owner is his father-in-law.

His mailer, 2026
“Rebuild Anglin’s Fishing Pier.”
Under “My priorities for the next term.” See the mailer
Commissioner Theo Poulopoulos at Town Hall, April 14, 2026, about his father-in-law’s pier: something that everyone else gets to enjoy for free.

Town Hall, April 14, 2026, on the Town’s own video · watch with sound, 25 sec

He was talking about his father-in-law’s pier. He told the room he is the owner’s son-in-law and that he sits out pier votes. There was no vote that night. Watch all of his remarks (3 min 23 sec).

It was never free. We paid $2 to walk on it and $7 to fish from it.

Sing the chorus
It was never free!
(Two to walk!)
It was never free!
(Seven to fish!)
We paid our way on that pier, every summer, every week.
It was never free!
We just want our pier back, Theo. That’s all we seek.
From the bridge:
“You can’t promise you’ll rebuild it, then sit out every vote.”

Anglin’s Pier, 2017 to today

Nine years. Here is every step.

The Town requires the owner or a representative at the code hearings about every three months.

● Sept 2017Hurricane Irma damages the pier.
● March 2018The Town cites the pier for lack of maintenance. No permit to repair it had been applied for.
● March 2019The repair deadline passes. Fines start: $250 a day.
● Jan 2022Repairs still haven’t restarted. New fines start: $200 a day, every day since.
● Nov 2022Hurricane Nicole. The Town closes the pier. The restaurant stays open.
● Jan 2024The owner’s lawyer tells the Commission: permits by April 2026, construction in summer 2026.
● Feb–Apr 2025OWNER’S SIDE CAMEThree code hearings after spring-break jumpers. The Magistrate orders guards, signs and a barrier. By March, only the signs are done.
● Feb 26, 2026NO ONE CAMECode hearing. A letter asks for 90 more days. Granted.
● April 14, 2026Town Commission. The owner speaks (his words are below). Vice Mayor Strauss asks for pier updates every three months.
● May 28, 2026NO ONE CAMECode hearing. Another delay, to September.
● Sept 24, 2026The September hearing is cancelled.
● TodayAbout $410,000 in fines. No lien. No permit to rebuild on the Town’s timeline. Not on a Commission agenda since April. Next code hearing: October 22.

Spiro Marchelos, the pier’s owner, said:
“The fines that are running, let them run and it’ll be resolved when time comes.”
“So if you guys wanna help, no problem. Write me the checks, okay?”
Same code hearings, 2026 · same Magistrate
A garbage cart got a bill.
An empty building got a lien.
The pier got another delay.

At the February and May hearings, no one showed up for these cases either. Here is what they got.

🗑️Two homes left a garbage cart at the curb a day late. Both already fixed.$100 each, due now
🌿Overgrown yard, cited two weeks before.Fix it in a month, or $200 a day per violation
🐝Empty apartment building. A beehive came back for the seventh time.A lien on the property, plus $495.17
🔨Home remodel without a permit. Permit since issued.$100, due now
🧾Two businesses without a business tax receipt. Both fixed.$100 each, due now

From the Special Magistrate’s minutes, Feb. 26 and May 28, 2026. Private owners are not named.

The $410,000 question

Why isn’t there a lien?

Florida law lets a town record unpaid code fines as a lien on the property. The empty building above got one. The pier has not.

“The fines accrued thus far have not been recorded as a lien on the property in order to provide Town Staff with continuing oversight and to allow information to be shared with the public.”
Town staff, Commission minutes, April 14, 2026, p. 3

We think fines that have run since 2019 are long enough to decide. Record the lien, or say why not, in public.

We think a commissioner should speak for the people who want the pier back, not for the family that owns it. On November 3, vote:

Seat 1
Howard Goldberg
instead of Theo Poulopoulos
Mayor
Randy Strauss
instead of Edmund Malkoon
Seat 2
Patrick Ferguson
instead of Justin Bartholomew
Charter questions 1–8
NO on all 8
Election Day

Vote by mail, early, or on Election Day. Mail ballots and early voting times are at browardvotes.gov. Town races here are decided by a few hundred votes.
